Thursday, 8 November 2018

Sale Price - the story so far...

When Captain Disaster in: Death Has A Million Stomping Boots goes on sale from 1st to 9th December 2018, the size of the discount will depend on certain targets being reached.  The discount currently stands at 16%, which will mean the game will cost $7.55.

If you feel that's too much, never fear!  There's still plenty of time to reach some of the targets.  For instance, just 2 more downloads of the game's demo will knock another 2% off the price.

See this post for full details.

Further December Sale Details

I am going to make the discount targets a little more detailed for our December sale.

For both Followers on Itch and Demo Downloads of Stomping Boots, if they reach 100, it will represent 10% off the price when the sale is on.  However I am now adding stages towards that target:

  • 80 = 2%
  • 85 = 4%
  • 90 = 6%
  • 95 = 8%
  • 100 = 10%

So if the main target isn't reached, every follow / download can still go towards lowering the price.

Will add details of the other metrics soon...

(Incidentally, with 80 demo downloads, 12% off is already guaranteed, and only 1 more follower is needed to make it 14%.)

December Sale Details

Okay so here's what we're going to do - we're going to run a sale from 1st to 9th December.

But this will be an INTERACTIVE sale (sort of) - much fun and stuff.

I've got a few targets I'd like the reach, and the more targets that are met, the more I will reduce the price of the game for this sale.  It's innovative or something.  Anyway...

  • I'll take 10% off the price anyway, because I'm nice
  • Followers on Itch:
    • 90 Followers = 10% off
    • 88 Followers = 8% off
    • 85 Followers = 6% off
    • 82 Followers = 4% off
    • 80 Followers = 2% off
  • Demo Downloads for Captain Disaster in: Death Has A Million Stomping Boots:
    • 92 Demo Downloads = 12% off
    • 90 Demo Downloads = 10% off
    • 88 Demo Downloads = 8% off
    • 85 Demo Downloads = 6% off
    • 82 Demo Downloads = 4% off
    • 80 Demo Downloads = 2% off
  • Downloads for all of my games on Itch
    • 830 Downloads = 10% off
    • 815 Downloads = 8% off
    • 800 Downloads = 6% off
    • 785 Downloads = 4% off
    • 770 Downloads = 2% off
  • Views on Itch
    • 6,900 Views = 10% off
    • 6,800 Views = 8% off
    • 6,700 Views = 6% off
    • 6,600 Views = 4% off
    • 6,500 Views = 2% off
  • Ratings for Stomping Boots:
    • 20 Ratings = 10%
    • 19 Ratings = 8%
    • 18 Ratings = 6%
    • 17 Ratings = 4%
    • 16 Ratings = 2%
  • Followers on Twitter:
    • 2,600 Followers = 2% (taken off the higher tiers as clearly not going to happen - will keep this one despite followers dropping back under 2,600 though!)
So, depending on the above, the game could end up being a whopping 60% off the normal price!

If you fancy getting the game at a discount, get viewing, following, or downloading one of my free games - every little helps towards hitting those targets!

Current discount figure: 40%

This from The Suitor, who discovered that the game had been released upon revisiting the AGS forums after quite some time away:

Couldn't have put it better myself! :-D

Another new review on Itch

Another 5* review :-)

"If you enjoy retro point and click adventures with funny dialogues and all kind of crazy scfi characters... this is definitely your game. Our hero may look more like the anti-hero himself, but he is bold and determined trying to find his way in chaos to do the right thing. I join the Captain D fanclub! :-D"

Haven't got the game yet?  Get it on Itch!  (We're "too indie" for Steam...;-p)

Anyone interested in the game but not played the demo yet?

People of earth, it has come to my attention that not many people have played the demo of Captain Disaster in: Death Has A Million Stomping Boots.

This situation cannot be allowed to continue!

Please use a download option below:

You can also download the demo from Itch or FireFlower Games.

People of earth, don't allow this deplorable situation to continue or your entire solar system shall be eaten by a small dog.

New video review

This one is... *GASP* ... a "duelling" game review!  Will our little game survive?!?

Well... actually, we've come out of it rather well, with an overall rating of 8/10.  Pleased with that! :-)  Even if he did say that the graphics look like they come from "pre-history"...

"Pick it up, you won't be disappointed"

Something for the weekend?

If you like the sound of a game that has been described by reviewers as:

  • "a good old school point"
  • "an incredibly in-depth adventure"
  • "an absolutely bonkers, dangerous, grand adventure"
  • "well-written with a delightful sense of comic humor"
  • "a throwback point and click adventure with a nice, comical, story"
  • "everything a point and click game should be and more!"
  • "a light-hearted comedy adventure with a few head-scratching puzzles"

then rejoice!  For it is on sale this weekend.  If you don't want to buy now, you can download the demo to get a good idea of the gameplay and what passes for humour in the game. :-D

Captain Disaster caught in the sights of The Reticule

Fortunately the reviewer rated us as "On Target" (Above average game, certain aspects or niggles making the game not for everyone but a stand out example of the genre), saying "As a nod to classic Sierra adventures and celebration of science fiction, D:HBTAMSDCI performs remarkably well."  Okay fair enough, I don't know quite how he came up with that abbreviation, or how he managed to complete the entire game in 2 hours!  Still, it's a nice review, so if you want, go and...

"For gamers passionate about point and click games, Captain Disaster is a shining example of the genre. The array of unique and interesting puzzles is perfectly blended with quirky humour, pop culture references and skilled storytelling. It’s everything a point and click game should be and more!"

It's been a little while since the last one, but today I saw another nice comment about the game had been posted by Kastchey:

"I was excited to see the game finally complete and it did not disappoint! A satisfying amount of gameplay, charming retro art, catchy music and, most importantly of all, a truckload of British humour at its best. Loved it."

12th Comment on the AGS Games Page

This one from NickyNyce, who you may know as the dev of The Visitor games.  (So yeah, he's a little biased in favour of comedy scfi pointandclicks! :-D)

"Captain Disaster is a joy to play and had me playing non stop until I beat it. I refused to look at a walkthrough and I'm glad I didn't, because in the end, I made it through and really loved every minute of it. The puzzles were great and there was a very good variety of them. A well made game with a cool character, fun story, great puzzles and although the artwork could use improvement, they are still enjoyable and it all flows rather well. Bravo to you and the team. Looking forward to your next adventure!"

Now available on Itch.io - Captain Disaster: The Damaris Touch

Answering distress calls can be a tricky business, as Captain Disaster has found out before - but he's a good-hearted individual so of course he answers yet another one. At first there doesn't seem to be any danger, just a couple of odd aliens with a unique business plan - but things soon take a turn for the worst as it emerges that they are not alone on the planet.

Another comedy sci-fi short story from the deranged creative mind behind the Captain Disaster eBooks and computer games.

Now available on Itch.io - The Dark Side of the Moon (eBook)

Have you been feeling ashamed or depressed because you don't have a device that you could buy Captain Disaster: The Dark Side of the Moon for?  Don't worry, that's perfectly understandable.  However feel ashamed and depressed no longer, because it's now available as a PDF eBook on Itch.io - and slightly cheaper than the Kindle version!

The eBook costs $1.25 but if you're not sure whether you'll enjoy it, the first chapter is available as a free download.

Captain Disaster sleep-walks his way onto a moon with a terrible secret. Will he escape the danger, find help from the moon's inhabitants, and manage to endure the many dreadful puns, and manage to get back home?

This short story of 10.5K words is based on the point and click adventure game of the same name, but with a few differences thrown in to make things more interesting, and to include more character interaction. The humour never leaves the page but this is also a story with heart. Fans of classic science fiction books, movies, TV series etc will spot numerous references - some subtle, some less so - including Dr Who, Terrahawks, Star Trek and many others. There are several references that point and click adventure game fans will recognise too.

In summary, ideal readers of this ebook will be sci-fi fans who like a laugh, don't take things terribly seriously and ideally are also fans of the point and click genre.

YouTuber Drak232 has given quite an in-depth review of the game, with some very fair constructive criticism that we'll take into account when making the next Captain Disaster game.  He's clearly a bit of a fan of the 90s classic style pointandclicks though as he gives us a cracking 9/10 rating! :-)

6th Review - JustAdventure

Absolutely delighted with the latest review.  Reviewer Cindy Kyser is obviously an adventure gamer after our own hearts!

"It is a pixelated, 2D point-and-click retro adventure that takes the player back to what made the genre so much fun in the early years. I am most reminded of classic games from Sierra and LucasArts that were released in the late 1980s and early 1990s."

"What I loved most about this game is that it is well-written with a delightful sense of comic humor...  I would describe it as an incredibly clever game. Pay attention and you will catch references to books, movies, art, and culture.  Some are overt (a visit to the StarDucks java shop) and others are more subtle (a book about “two score and ten colors between white and black”)."

"The soundtrack is excellent with professional voice-overs (done, in part, by CaptainD and TheBitPriest) for characters ranging from our human hero to an assortment of aliens. This, coupled with the music and intermittent narration, made me keep my headphones on (which I don’t always do)."

"To summarize, CaptainD and TheBitPriest have done an admirable job of creating a game that is delightful to play. Don’t be put off by pixels and simplicity. Team Disaster has reaffirmed what we know in our hearts - that story and characters are really what adventure gaming is all about."

The sale continues but moves vendor...

Disaster Area 3D model!

Well... not the kind of 3D model you were probably thinking about.

My little girl wanted me to make some air-dry clay figures with her so I made one of Captain Disaster's space ship.  The rest was... well... I don't know if it was a disaster or not.  But if it was a disaster, that would be fitting so it's not a disaster.  If it hadn't been a disaster... now, that would have been a disaster.
  • Get it?
  • Got it!
  • Good.

At any rate, you can't deny that it is 3D.

5th Review - AdventureGamers.com

I'll be honest - it's not the review I'd hoped for in many ways.  Most of the criticisms however I'd say are entirely fair, and the reviewer does end up by saying "If you enjoy old-school point-and-click games and space comedy, go and get Captain Disaster in Death Has a Million Stomping Boots; you won’t regret it" - so it's certainly not all bad!  A rating of 3.0 / 5.0 does hurt a bit though... :-(

4th Review - GameBoomers

Well this one effectively says it's silly, enjoyable and best suited to those who like their adventure games daft and fun.  Which is an absolutely fair description! :-)

11th Comment on the AGS Games Page

"What can I say but Fantastico.....

A great game that was fun to play, had some nice touches of humor that at times had me rolling in fits.... Great on-screen parody references....

The action was non stop like an express train....

With a few minor tweaks this could be 'Game of the year'....

Thank you captain and friends for making such as great, enjoyable game....

Long live Captain Disaster..."

Oh well... not game of the year then, but fairly close! :-)

10th Comment on the AGS Games Page

Another lovely comment from a player who liked the game!

I just don't get bored of seeing these... :-)

"It's Captain Disaster, a zany, outlandish comedy game that never fails to amuse. Gameplay is not too difficult/frustrating, and voice acting I thought was top rate. As a commercial game, I feel like it is a complete package, I only wish it were longer."

On sales figure goals and the like

It's hard to be too specific about these things as distributor and payment processor fees vary, as does the exchange rate, but in simple terms these are my goals for sales figures of Captain Disaster in: Death Has A Million Stomping Boots (talking full price sales here):

  • 50 games sold will enable me to pay the last of my costs related to the game
  • 300 games sold will enable me to cover all my costs associated with the game
  • 150 games sold per week will probably be enough for me to go full-time dev, with the caveat that I need this to continue for several months, have a new game at least nearly ready to launch, and not get mauled by unfavourable exchange rate changes.
At the moment only the first goal is looking achievable by the end of February 2018 (and even that might be pushing it!), but hopefully when some more reviews come out sales will improve a bit.

Needless to say, any promotion done by any fans of the game on social media or whatever is greatly appreciated! :-)

3rd review - on Wraithkal

In complete contrast to the second review, this one is by someone who is both a big fan of the pointandclick genre and also shares my ridiculous sense of humour.

Needless to say he liked the game... quite a lot.

"What a mission though. Funky music, varied locales, lovely pixel art, appropriately cheesy voice acting and a story full of twists and turns one simply has to experience to believe. Were I to simply tell the tale of what Captain Disaster in: Death Has A Million Stomping Boots experienced, chances are most would think me absolutely mad. And rightfully so, as you’ll see for yourself by picking up a copy of the game and playing through it. Which is something I would highly recommend – especially for fans of the genre – because of just how zany the entire thing is… in the best possible way. Long live Captain Disaster!"

2nd review - on BigBossBattle

Got a review from someone who I don't think is a dedicated pointandclicker - which means she's slightly less complimentary of my game, but it offers a nice contrast to the reviews by established fans of the genre.

"Captain Disaster takes a level of puzzle-solving prowess far higher than any recent genre siblings I’ve played, putting it in line with old Sierra and LucasArts favourites and its art style is reminiscent of that same era. "

"This is a point-and-click, though, so we really ought to spend some time talking about the puzzles. They’re about as difficult, perhaps slightly less so, than you’d think its older inspirations would be. Some combinations are straightforward and overall puzzles can tax your brain to think up non-obvious links between items or objectives."

"Captain Disaster turned out to be an incredibly in-depth adventure with a world more vivid than we imagined from first impressions. It is difficult, harking back to a similar era of games, but you’ll find yourself motivated to carry on by the sheer litany of puns and references. If you’re looking for a challenge and a quirky story to boot, this may be worth checking out."

9th comment on the AGS Games Page

We're almost into double figures!

"A spoof of the space opera genre that actually manages to be THE best space opera I've seen in years. It's quite simply FUN! It's got a memorable cast of aliens, robots and AI's. It's got an epic finale. But it doesn't take itself very seriously, and pokes fun at everything - especially its main character. He's a slob and he knows it. But he gets things done - even if the whole universe conspires against him.

The game's a classic point&click in every way. It's got simple, neat lo-res graphics, some funky electronic beats, fun puzzles, and lots and lots of humor (that doesn't rely on referencing Space Quest)."

What this commentator probably doesn't know is that I've not really ever played the Space Quest games!  A few minutes getting annoyed with one years ago before giving up was my only experience of the official games.  Have played one or two fan games since.

The nice thing is that I was very much a LucasFilm Games fan growing up, while my co-dev was quite a Sierraphile, so we have a good mix of both,.

8th comment on the AGS Games Page

Yet another nice comment about the game!

"It's a very fun game with a great combination of story and misture of some tributes to movies and games!

Dave is a very creative writer and his books and games are very immersive and will always bring you many laughs!

I definitely want to play more of his future games!"

I mean yes, from the fact that he likes both my games and ebooks this gentleman is clearly unhinged, but lovely to see all the same! :-D

Not too shabby! :-)  Would be nice to see Stomping Boots get up to 90%, we'll have to see if it happens.

7th comment on the AGS Games Page, finally an overall rating and AGS Awards Nominations open

The latest commentator wasn't quite as complimentary about the gameplay as others have been, though he liked the humour a lot it seems.

"I played the full version, yay! I was excited to see the game complete. The jokes, and Captain Disaster himself were really fun to play. The voice-acting was okay. The music and sound-effects were good. The story was fun, but strange in some places, as were the puzzles, so I admit I used the walk-through to get unstuck at times. I felt that some story and/or puzzle elements may have been rushed. But overall, I enjoyed the game. I laughed, and laughed again. :)"

We've also now reached the 5 individual ratings required to get an overall score.  The overall rating isn't quite everything I'd hoped for, however it's not bad at all.

Visual:
76%
Immersion:
96%
Puzzles & Pacing:
88%
Overall Enjoyment:
88%

Also the AGS Awards 2017 nominations are now open until 13:59 GMT on Saturday 10 February 2018, sop please head over to the Nominations Page and hopefully you'll deem Captain Disaster worthy of a nomination (or two... or three... or as many as you like! :-D).

6th comment on AGS Games Page

The comments are coming in thick and fast (well, relatively speaking) but for some reason we still have less than the 5 individual ratings to give an overall score!  Agonising!!  (If you've played the game and haven't rated it yet I'd be massively grateful for your honest ratings on the AGS Game Page!)

Still it is a VERY nice comment. :-)

"Really hilarious comedy point-and-click of the classic sort. Any fan of Space Quest would love this to pieces. Puzzles are spot-on, never really got stuck for any extreme length of time and yet they were not too easy either. Right in the Goldilocks Zone! Visuals are nice and pay homage to the old school point and clicks and work for the retro pixel art aesthetic that this game is going for. (Side note: Captain D's surprised face cracks me up. I order at Starbucks with that face and it never fails to crack the barrista up either.) If you like your British humor extra cheesy with a cheesy stuffed crust and smothered in cheese sauce (as many old-school p-n-cs were) then you will love this. There are so many sci-fi references in here, if it was any more dense with Whovian, Star Trek, Star Wars and other 20th-century IP callbacks it would turn into a neutron star with the face of the Cat from Red Dwarf.

I give it 6 1/2 faux Alan Rickmans out of 5! :D"

This comment comes from SilverSpook, who is a fellow dev (he made the very highly regarded Neofeud) and also streamed himself playing Captain Disaster in: Death Has A Million Stomping Boots.
